Autism

Autism, otherwise known as Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD, is a condition characterized by a broad range of impairments in social interaction, behavior, and communication. There are several ways that these symptoms appear in individuals with autism, with some common ones being difficulty in social settings, repetitive behavior, aversion to sensory stimuli, and impairment of speech development.

Certain medical conditions are also commonly seen in these individuals, including GI disorders, seizures, and difficulty sleeping. As the name suggests, autism occurs on a spectrum. The kinds and extent of symptoms related to ASD vary between individuals, with impacts ranging from mild to severe. These symptoms often begin to appear in early childhood, although the exact cause of ASD is still unknown.

Therapy can be beneficial for both children and adults with autism, as well as for family members or caretakers. A therapist can offer personalized care and treatment suggestions, as well as support and resource referrals. To speak with someone today, browse our directory of trusted, experienced therapists.
