Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder, or manic-depressive illness, is a type of mental illness characterized by marked periods of either elevated or depressed mood and energy. These are known as either “manic” or “depressive” episodes, respectively. A manic episode is usually marked by excessive amounts of energy, extremely elevated mood, and high amounts of energy. Conversely, a depressive episode is marked by low energy, a lack of activity or motivation, and a depressed, generally “down” mood.

There are several different forms of bipolar disorder that are characterized based on the intensity and length of either the manic or depressive episodes. It can be extremely difficult to live with bipolar disorder as it makes a consistent, balanced life virtually impossible.

People with bipolar disorder may feel that it is difficult to maintain a relationship, keep a steady job, or feel emotionally stable. Bipolar disorder can feel alienating, but it is important to know that you are not alone. If you feel that you may be struggling with bipolar disorder, we can help.
