Many people struggle with what is either known as an eating disorder or a form of disordered eating. Eating disorders are characterized by a pattern of irregular eating, a negative relationship with food, and/or an obsession with body image. Eating disorders can take several different forms, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder, amongst others.
People struggling with disordered eating may be experiencing some of the above symptoms, but do not fit the criteria to be diagnosed with an eating disorder. In either case, struggling with food-related mental illnesses can be distressing, lonely, and even dangerous. These kinds of mental illnesses have a strong physical component due to the effect that they have on the body. Those with eating disorders may be dehydrated, lethargic, or have low blood pressure.
Eating disorders are also highly correlated with other mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety. If you think you may be struggling with an eating disorder or disordered eating, know that you are not alone. To speak with someone today, browse our directory of trusted, experienced therapists.
